Disabled Vets Get Property Tax Break
Military veterans in Texas who have received a 100percent disability rating or are considered unemployable by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will pay no property taxes on their homestead, thanks to a new law approved by the Texas Legislature.
The law is effective for the 2009 tax year and provides an exemption of the total appraised value of the homestead, which is the owner’s primary residence. Veterans who qualify should make arrangements soon to have the adjustment take effect this year.
See www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxforms/vetexempt.pdf. for an application that can be provided to the county appraisal district, or contact the Tarrant Appraisal District at 817-284-0024.
Veterans may also need to contact their mortgage lenders to adjust their escrow payments.
